The Kerala government, in a directive recently, demanded the owners of all the heavy vehicles in the state to put speed governors on in their vehicles before September 30, 2005. A joint committee of the bus and truck owners has decided to strike on June 6 and 7 in protest against this directive. Interestingly, they pointed out that such a practice doesn’t exist in other states!
The decision was taken by the government in view of the increasing number of vehicle accidents in the state. The number of accidents and thereby the death toll increases obviously because of the speed contest among various players. This is something that strictly needs a big attention and it has to be prevented at the earliest. Also, there needs to be regular inspection whether or not the vehicles follow this directive, and there needs to be strict punishment and penalty; not only on the drivers, but also on the owners if found to have violated this rule.
