Is the Narendra Modi government going to go back in time and reinvent the wheel? There is strong speculation that his government is planning to declare Bharat Ratna for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose this week ahead of the Independence Day. While bestowing the highest civilian honour on him is a good gesture, that is not the best an Indian government can do to honour him. There are hundreds of secret documents lying with various union ministries which can tell a less popular story about what actually happened to Bose - otherwise called 'the truth'. The PMO itself is holding no less than 33 highly confidential documents about his fate. There was a similar Bharat Ratna move by the Congress government in the 1990s which was questioned by both the Bose family and the public. Finally, the government had to cancel the Bharat Ratna declaration as it could not establish Bose's death in a plane crash. It is only logical to ask for the proof of death when a person is given an award posthumously. I hope the Modi government will show the spunk to declassify all the secret information it holds about Bose and respect him in true and complete sense.

Seminar on Netaji's disappearance
It was Desh Prem Diwas on January 23rd, the 117th birth anniversary of the legendary Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. We at Mission Netaji could organise and participate in a lot of national and state level programs on the day in various cities. The idea we projected for the occasion was total declassification of the files related to Bose. The most important event for the day was the declassification march organised in Kolkata by like minded associations and people including the Bose family.
I was invited to speak at a seminar organised by the Department of History at the Sree Narayana College, Kollam. The seminar was titled "Decoding Netaji Mystery" and the topic was about the mysterious disappearance of Bose in 1945. I spoke for 2.5 hours and the response I received was encouraging. It was the first time I was speaking to 130+ students of history and political science in a single function. The talk went beyond the regular lunch break, but it was great to see the students staying back and asking questions about the disappearance of Bose - clear indication that Bose is no longer a forgotten hero. My sincere thanks to the college authorities, especially the principal Dr Sushama Devi, History Department Head Dr PR Jayachandran, and Assistant Professor Rishy N.

TIME flies! Another August 18!
We at Mission Netaji have been trying to get them since 2004-05 but every time our request gets turned down by the Home Ministry or External Affairs Ministry stating that if the truth comes out, India's soverignty and relation with foreign countries will be affected. Maybe they are ignorant of the Thomas Mann wordings "A harmful truth is better than a useful lie"! What is the truth in this case, which the government tries to cover up with lies for the last 7 decades? Nothing but the fact that Bose was alive in India, frequently changing residences in Uttar Pradesh, refusing visitors all the time, living the life of an extraordinary sanyasi, at least until 1985. If so, who died in the crash? What made Bose live the rest of his life incognito? Our government knows best.
Even in today's world, appearing on the cover of the TIME magazine is a big thing. Bose was on the cover of the US edition of TIME 75 years ago with his quote "Britain has ruined India economically, politically, culturally, and spiritually" printed below his colour image. The cover story was titled "Chariot of Freedom". Bose, Britain's enemy number one was described by TIME as "Among the slick, top handful of Congress politicians, most of them obviously enjoying the incense of power and prestige, Subhas Bose stands out." Even today, he stands out from the rest. If we allow him to take rust in the pages of history as an ambitious but failed fighter, posterity will not forgive us for not asking the truth about the cigar chomping holy man of Uttar Pradesh who called himself "Dead Man". Support us in our mission to get to the truth by asking for complete declassification of all documents about Bose. Like Elvis Presley put it "Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't going away."
When it comes to Netaji's fate, "transparency" has a different meaning!
23-Jan-2013 marked the 116th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the greatest yet the most ignored Indian freedom fighter. We know his date of birth but do we have his definitive date of death? What happened to him during the peak of the Second World War? Official version of Indian government is that Bose was killed in a plane crash in Taiwan on 18-Aug-1945. But then how can he die if the Taiwan government says there was no such plane crash in their country on or around that date? Two Indian enquiry commissions finalised that Bose died in the crash whereas a third commission proved in 2005 that there was no such plane crash! So, what happened to Bose if he saw the morning of 19-Aug-1945? Isn't that the beginning of an unclear and unheard story?
Our government has all the information, but it still maintains secrecy about the incidents post 18-Aug-1945. Here are some numbers that can give you a shock - the various government agencies and departments today maintain more than 1000 secret files about Bose. The Prime Minister's Office is holding 33 such files, out of which 7 are labelled TOP SECRET which according to the PMO, can potentially create exceptionally grave damage if they come out. The remaining files are labelled either SECRET or CONFIDENTIAL. The Ministry of Home Affairs holds 70,000 pages of secret information on Bose. The Ministry of External Affairs is holding at least 12 secret files. The Intelligence Bureau has 77 secret files. RA&W (Research and Analysis Wing) says it does not have any secret files about Bose but a sworn affidavit filed to one of the commissions reveals that it also possesses secret information. Even the Ministry of Urban Development, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and the Department of Food & Public Distribution hold secret files about him!
Why can't we end this secrecy about Bose's death? What bomb does those files contain that can harm India's sovereignty and foreign relations as the government keeps telling us? That too, even after 67 years of his "death"? As the Dalai Lama famously said, "Lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity". But what did our government and intelligence agencies do to the Braveheart? They still hide information about the Bose death mystery from the public by stamping documents as TOP SECRET even after 66 years of his "so-called death in a plane crash." The Intelligence Bureau chose to cook up intelligence reports to "prove the fake death". Bose must get justice and the deserving place in history. Else, posterity will indict us for our slackness in asking the government why it left out in the cold the greatest son Mother India has ever produced.

There are many books around on the Subhas Bose death mystery, but Anuj Dhar's India's Biggest Cover-up stands out from the rest, due to three reasons. One; it is new. The author weeds out fables from the mystery and delves deep into the subject. Two; his premises are backed by logic, findings by evidences, and writing by reason. He also presents an action plan to resolve the mystery, something which Shivraj Patil 'advisedly' omitted in his ATR (Action Taken Report) on the Mukherjee Commission report. Three; the very title of the book! Dhar takes the lid off the longstanding plane crash myth and in doing so, calls a spade a spade. He uncloaks some of the shoddy national leaders and officials who have been lying to the nation to lead us to believe that Bose was killed long back in a plane crash. Not surprisingly, the list includes India's first Prime Minister and even the would-be President! I suppose, that justifies the book title.
The book is a chronicle of different events in the mystery organised meaningfully into different chapters. Generally, such a work based on the past can be dreary but this one makes the reading as easy and engaging as it can be. Past and present day events are skilfully ran up together as in a thriller. To start with, Dhar flails the plane crash theory on its head by laying out evidences against it one after another. I don't think there would be too many punters for the plane crash story after reading the book.
Rather than being an author, Dhar assumes the role of a moderator, considering different views and opinions in great detail. He does not assent to the popular fabrications to drive home his point. All of the Bose mystery stories we have heard in the past were an admixture of facts and myths. But Dhar demonstrates the highest level of self-worth and truthfulness to his work by rebuffing 'manipulated proof' that doesn't appear cooked up on the first look. His sieve separates the believable part from the confusing claims, evident from his explanation - against popular belief - that the monk seen by Nehru's bier was not Bose.
Justice Mukherjee only recommended the government to probe the Russian connection of the mystery. But here is a man who has taken the trouble to follow Bose's trail and boy, hasn't he got fantastic results! Dhar even springs a surprise by showing the photograph of a high profile meeting of 1960s attended by a 'Bose look-alike', who is yet to be identified! Regarding the Bhagwanji angle, he presents the stories told by the baba disciples and tries to find matches from historical events. He displays great poise in dealing with beliefs about Bhagwanji, without going overboard.
Dhar is not just an author, but a researcher in true sense; and his work is not just a book, but a well compiled piece of history. Dhar also exposes a good mound of documents based on which he deduces his views, all logical and factual. Dhar is no Pied Piper; instead, he assists the readers to use their own common sense to draw conclusions. This is where the book excels. Now the most important question - how would I rate this book? I can say with confidence that in terms of 'completeness', only one thing would contain more details on the Bose mystery - the quarantined information lying in our government archives. In one's avidity for more information on the Bose mystery, India's Biggest Cover-up would remain 'the best vade mecum' on the subject. And I am sure every reader would thirstily long for the day the vaulted truth comes out in public domain.
Note: Anuj Dhar is a good friend of mine, but this review is not influenced by our friendship. What you just read is my personal opinion after going through the Kindle edition of the book. Afterall, even the plane crash theory supporters would switch sides once they get to see the evidences Anuj presents in the book.

After prodding the publisher through the bookseller, I got a second edition copy of Anuj Dhar's book Back from Dead - Inside the Subhas Bose Mystery. As the name suggests, the book is about the 'mystery' surrounding the disappearance of the legendary freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The first look of the book gave me the impression that it has touched the subject matter deep and fine. A detailed review will appear here soon. :-)

The commission has also asked the government to seek Russia's approval before making the facts public. The whole hope can still be marred by the government because of this clause.

Another item of interest in the last three weeks was the increasing complexity created by the Mathai note. The commission expressed that this was one of the most interesting cases that had come before it. The commission also opined that dedicated research is needed in this matter.

Netaji 'death' information to be public in 3 months!
Is the wait over? At least, that is the situation that we are looking at, in three months' time. The Central Information Council (CIC) has asked the Indian government to release all the secret papers regarding Bose disappearance within the next three months. It is sure that the Indian government will play all possible games in the meantime to block the information from surfacing. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Anything could happen!

Two very interesting and utmost relevant questions! These were asked by the Information Commissioner to the Home Ministry officials when the latter tried all ways to defend its stand in the Bose disappearance enigma. The CIC scolded the ministry for taking decisions in such critical matters on their own and asked which body (intelligence/ bureaucracy/ politicians) took the decision for non-disclosure of information. A full bench hearing by the CIC (Central Information Council of India) opined that the Home must take a 'reasoned decision' in this matter. Home Ministry is of the view that information on Netaji's disapperance can cause undesirable effects in India, especially in West Bengal. Mission Netaji continues to fight!

The Prime Minister's Office is now seeking ways to dismiss the RTI appeal filed by Mission Netaji to release information on the destroyed documents on Netaji. The petition was filed after Mission Netaji came to know that documents related to the 'death' of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were dstroyed by the government in 1972, as part of routine review/weeding process.

RAW says it has no information on disappearence of Netaji
Kolkata, Feb. 1 (PTI): In its first-ever response to an unofficial body, the country's premier external intelligence agency Research and Analysis wing (RAW) has informed 'Mission Netaji' that it was not holding any information on Subhas Chandra Bose.
Mission Netaji is conducting its own investigation into the mysterious disappearance of the hero and moving various Government agencies for information on the matter. It had requested the RAW under the Right To Information Act for disclosure of any information that it might hold on the issue.
"I am directed to inform you ... that the RAW does not have any information pertaining to Netaji. As such no list as requested by you ..can be provided," under secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat P N Ranjit Kumar told Mission Netaji's Anuj Dhar in a letter dated January 19.
Kumar also reminded Dhar that the RAW was not obliged to provide any information under the RTI Act.
Dhar, however, is skeptical about RAW's response.
"In 2001, the then Home Secretary Kamal Pande filed an affidavit before the Mukherjee Commission (which was probing Netaji's mysterious disappearance). This affidavit listed out several Top Secret/Secret records whose disclosure was likely to evoke widespread reactions and harm India's relations with friendly countries," Dhar said.
Dhar said among these records some are with RAW.
It was an 'Under Office' note under the identification number 11/1/94-IC-2829 dated March 25, 1994, concerning certain articles based on classified KGB records published in a Russian journal.
Dhar claimed that the RAW had initially informed Mission Netaji that it had no record or files relating to the alleged disappearance of Netaji as the organisation was formed on September 21, 1968.
"And now, P N Ranjit Kumar has made a sweeping statement that RAW does not have any information pertaining to Netaji and that RAW is under no obligation to spill the beans. But it has no licence to mislead either," Dhar said.
The Delhi-based organisation would now bring the matter to the notice of the Central Information Commission.

Kolkata: The rejection of the Justice Manoj Mukherjee Commission's report on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's disappearance on Friday came under scrutiny by the Calcutta High Court, which asked the Central government to clarify through an affidavit its decision to set it aside. A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice K K Prasad gave the government six weeks to file the affidavit, after which the matter would come up for hearing. The order followed a PIL by advocate Rudrajyoti Bhattacharya, who challenged the rejection of the Commission's report by the government. He claimed it had rejected the report in just one line without assigning any reason. Bhattacharya claimed the report had concluded, on the basis of available evidence, that Netaji did not die in an air crash at Taihoku on August 18, 1945. He claimed the Commission, which was set up by the Union government on the direction of a division bench of the High Court in 1998, had submitted its report to home ministry. The ministry disagreed with the report in May 2006 without assigning any reason, he alleged.

The greatest injustice any government could have done to a patriot.... I have only this to tell in one sentence about the Indian government's refusal to make the papers on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose public. Previously, it had agreed to make certain papers declassified so that the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a great leader could have ended. Now, the government has come up with a statement that they are not going to make the files pertaining to the mystery public. At least, we at Mission Netaji were able to force the Indian government do a self-excoriation with this disclosure! It is baffling to see that the same government is taking utmost care about the security and life of Sonia Gandhi now!

Now answer this:
- If Bose had really died in 1945, and that too in a plane crash, why on earth should the Indian government refuse to declassify reports on his death?
- Why should the government say that the disclosure of the death of a national hero will affect its foreign relations even after a good six decades?
It seems like Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru are the only Indian freedom fighters (!) according to the list with the government. I now feel ashamed to say I am an Indian....

True Indians cannot be kept shut with such statements. Our aim is to dismantle the mystery and show the world that the selfless courageous man was in India, even after his official death. Yes....!
The unheeded and unsung jewel: Can you ask back Netaji?
Heralded as the Patriot of Patriots and the Prince among Patriots even by an Ahimsa vocalist Mohandas Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose remains the most prominent figure in Indian history being at the receiving end of contempt, scoff and disdain ever since India got its much awaited freedom. People fail to recognize the worth and value of such an inspirational leader who grabbed the distinction of 'deal with Subhas on the spot' by a highly flustered Britain as early as 1941! Subsequent rulers and their textbooks despised his efforts and Netaji was largely ignored. People started following Gandhi and a self-hyped and toady-hyped star on the horizon Jawaharlal Nehru with immense interest, and the memories of Netaji started to fade out with time. At a time, when patriots like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru are being stamped as terrorists by the ruling parties, the future may well write off Netaji's efforts to liberate India as another terrorist move against the king and the kingdom. Nobody would care that the king was British and the kingdom was Britain. Young generations may be taught to excoriate him for his tie-ups with Adolf Hitler. Let me ponder a few opinions (in a random and assorted order) on Netaji Subhas Bose given by various people and organizations regarding his valour, illustriousness and bravery followed by some inspirational quotes from the man himself.Mohandas Gandhi: "Netaji will remain immortal for all time to come for his service to India. The hypnotism of the Indian National Army has cast its spell upon us. Netaji's name is one to conjure with. His patriotism is second to none. . . His bravery shines through all his actions. August 18: The first after officially (pending!) drawing off an occlusion in world history....
It's August 18! The first time after an Indian Inquiry commission stated that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose didn't die on this date in 1945. But still the Congress government is not prepared to accept the findings of the Mukherjee commission. It is the right of every Indian to know what happened to this 'Prince among Patriots', as described by Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi, though with a strong dislike of Bose's ideas, he went on to say that 'Bose's patriotism was second to none'. Don't you think it is hightime we got to the truth?Some anomalies, but only a tip of the ice-berg:
- The Japanese officers hinted pretty clearly that Bose had the plan to escape to Soviet Russia, in 1945.
- Some documents in the Russian archives reveal the conversation Joseph Stalin had with Vyacheslav Molotov in which he plans on using Bose effectively, and that in 1946.
- A Soviet spy named VG Sadyants had reported back to Russia about the political situation in India in 1946 and discussed Bose's prospectes then.
- Shyamlal Jain, a typist in Nehru's office stated before one of the previous commissions that he had typed a letter for Nehru, in which Nehru was blabbing to his British counterparts about Bose's plans and entry to Russia, and also about Stalin's willingness to accept him.
- Mission Netaji unearthed a letter by MO Mathai, Nehru's assistant, that says Bose's ashes were received in India more than 50 years ago. Still the Indian government spends money to maintain Bose's ashes in Renkoji temple in Japan.
- The commission stated pretty clearly that the person who died and cremated back in 1945 was not Netaji, but was Ichiro Okura, a Japanese soldier. But the Indian government is supremely confident despite any proof that it was Netaji.
- Dr Satyanarayan Sinha got some information pertaining to the existence of Bose even after his presumed death and passed on this news to Nehru. Later, Sinha wrote that he was unexpectedly reprimanded by Nehru for this information and the relation between the two worsened afterwards.
- Mukherjee commission requested the Indian government to try and ensure its proper running in Russia during its inquiry there, but the government did not indulge.
- The foreign commissions that inquired into Bose's disappearance traversed the plane crash theory and informed Nehru of their findings. But Nehru never came up with their findings.
- The commission asked for the classified documents available with the Indian government for inspection. But the government did not yield and it stated that those would wreck India's foreign relations, and would raise national and international security concerns. Ask yourself, is there something BIG in it. The answer is despite 61 years, there is.....
- Mukherjee commission found out that some of the documents relating to Netaji were deliberately destroyed by the Indian government.
- The Indian government continued to renew the pact that would impel them to hand over those coming under the definition of 'War Criminal' to their 'enemy' Great Britain for trial and judgment. Now you know who that War Criminal was and why was the pact renewed even under the Indira Gandhi regime, years after the War Criminal's death in 1945!
- Last, but not the least, there lived a sanyasi known as Bhagwanji a.k.a. Gumnami Baba in Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, who lived at least till 1985 September 16, who was identical to Bose in all likelihood, whether it be his appearance, handwriting, life style, passions and thinking,....... in all aspects, though on the QT, according to various testimonials. He resembled Bose in thought and actions completely..... In fact, he was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose....
Then why didn't he wish to resurface? The Indian Government has the answer. Will they come up with it? I don't think the Congress government will ever come up with it. Any other government? Well, the NDA had the option previously, but it also did not wish to. Basically, there are some 'top level' secrets no government would wish to reveal, whatever be the political gains they would achieve from it. Bose's case is one of them. Only someone brave, as brave as Netaji, can rise up with the truth, no remote controlled Prime Minister can ever....
Bhagat Singh the terrorist and Right to Information being 'Left'!
I was shocked and benumbed to see the noon news bulletin on some Malayalam channel a couple of days back! The swish scoop was about the History text book for the 10th standard ICSE syllabus. The book calls the great Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and his friends terrorists! 'They' (the syllabus makers) might not know who Bhagat, Sukhdev and Rajguru were; but as long as proper history and patriots remain in this land, the newer generations will only study the true history. Those who make such catastrophic chronicles should be the ones to be sent to gallows. Interesting this came at a time when the government was blocking weblogs fearing terrorism! And those with various goverment departments continue with their versions of terrorism history rather officially!The much expected Right to Information Act is to be modified by the
Indian governnment. This Act was intended to give laymen access to official documents regarding their queries. Mission Netaji had asked for copies of the documents used as exhibits by the Shah Nawaz and Khosla commissions to reach their conclusions regarding the death of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. But, Mission Netaji received the reply from the Home Ministry that it cannot process the request since it comes under Section 8(3) of Right to Information Act, which deals with information that will adversely affect the security of the State and its foreign affairs! There is something seriously shady, right? Now the government is planning to modify the Act, so that it is more comfortable to them. Plane crash was hoax says Mukherjee commission; but GoI subverts the report!
The official slickers with the Government of India, as expected played the only game they know how to - sabotage yet another commission report. The final report of the one-man Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry (JMCI) and the Action Taken Report (ATR) were tabled in Lok Sabha today by S Regupathy, the Minister of State for Home . The commission report stated pretty clearly and authentically that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose didn't die in any plane crash in Taiwan in 1945. The commission also reported that the ashes kept in the Renkoji Temple in Japan are not Bose's. Justice Mukherjee hinted that Bose escaped to the erstwhile USSR under the cover-up of the plane crash story.There is no wonder in the findings of the JMCI. The Taiwan government had deposed before the JMCI in January 2005 that there wasn't any such plane crash in that country on or around 18th August 1945. No official records either with the government or the hospitals there suggested that Bose was there. And hence the ashes can't be his. A top military officer in the erstwhile USSR had stated before the JMCI that there were records pertaining to the existence of Bose even after 1945, in his country.
It is time we thought how can the GoI disagree with the findings of the JMCI when evidences are there to prove that there was no such plane crash at all. Their shabbiness and wickedness are pretty evident from their stand. From the very first day, they were reluctant to the commission enquiry. It did not matter whether the ruling party was the BJP or the Congress. Everybody at the helm would fear to say that first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was a major culprit behind all the backdoor incidents. Also, it is time we the Indian citizens asked the government to reveal the truth about Netaji.

JMCI Report and Government ATR to be tabled today!
After prolonging the tabling of the report indefinitely, finally the Government of India is forced to posit the final report of the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry on the alleged death of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in a plane crash in Taiwan, in parliament today at around 12 noon. The government tried its best to protract the tabling of the report which was expected within six months from the deadline given to the commission to submit the report to the Home Ministry.
